Borderlands 4 Players Are Making a Huge Mistake in One of the Game's Side Quests

The Vend of the Line side quest in Borderlands 4 is tricking players into messing up their opportunity to grab a legendary weapon as the quest reward. Borderlands 4 has been out for a few weeks, and as the franchise’s first true open-world entry, it’s filled to the brim with nearly 100 side quests for players to hunt down and complete for major rewards.

Borderlands 4‘s Vend of the Line quest is first encountered in the northwestern region of Kairos, Carcadia Burn, in the city of Carcadia which serves as the home of the Electi, a group of ex-Order members who have been effectively exiled and now oppose the will of the Timekeeper. The quest begins when encountering news anchor Penelope Streams for the first time in Carcadia next to one of Borderlands‘ signature vending machines. This one is different, however, as on the back is a puzzle that starts the player on a lengthy side quest across Carcadia Burn that culminates in finding a legendary vending machine with players’ reward inside.

Borderlands 4 Players Are Missing Out On Vend of the Line Quest Reward

Many Borderlands 4 players have run into a problem with this Vend of the Line quest and its final reward. At the end of the quest, the legendary vending machine allows players to choose just one legendary weapon for a single dollar, shutting down and becoming unusable completely after the choice is made. Some players, out of sheer habit, have hit the “Sell All Junk” button upon approaching this particular vending machine, which the game counts as the machine’s one transaction, shutting the machine down and not allowing players to choose their legendary quest reward. Players who’ve been burned by this have been sounding off online, letting their frustration at the quest known.

It’s hard to blame players for forming the habit of automatically hitting the “Sell All Junk” button when approaching Borderlands‘ vending machines, as most of the time it’s not worth checking their stock, and selling junk becomes all they’re good for in most cases. It’s even tougher to place blame on the player for this Vend of the Line heartbreak when it’s not known that selling junk will count as the legendary vending machine’s one use. It’s unclear whether developer Gearbox designed the quest reward this way or if it’s a bug. Gearbox is almost certainly aware of the issue with how loud affected Borderlands 4 players have been about the issue. It would be a headscratcher if Gearbox intended the quest to work this way, though it’s hard to imagine this is the case.

Borderlands 4 has been receiving updates on a weekly basis since its September 12 launch, so if a fix for Vend of the Line’s quest reward is in the works, it’ll likely be coming sooner rather than later. For now, players who haven’t completed Vend of the Line yet should be careful once they reach the end not to sell their junk, ensuring they get to pick a shiny legendary weapon as their well-earned quest reward.
